The Science of HOCl
Hypochlorous acid isn’t a new ingredient, it’s one your body has been using since before you were born. Here’s what it actually is, how it works, and why not every bottle of it is the same.
What Is Hypochlorous Acid?
Your body already makes this.
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a molecule your white blood cells produce naturally, every time your body fights off infection or heals a wound. It’s part of your immune system’s first line of defence, gentle enough to work inside your own body, yet effective at clearing bacteria and calming inflammation.
Lumi Derma is that same molecule, made in a lab and bottled for your skin. We’re not introducing something foreign, we’re giving your skin more of what it already knows how to use.
How It's Made
Just water, salt, and electricity.
Our formulation process is intentionally simple. We pass a mild saline solution through an electrolysis process using our H2autO Technology (U.S. Patented), which produces pure hypochlorous acid, no synthetic chemicals, no stabilising additives, no shortcuts.
This is also why Lumi Derma is fragrance-free. Adding scent might mask the natural, mild smell of active HOCl but it can also affect the stability and potency of the formula. The mild scent you notice isn’t a flaw, it’s a sign the molecule is active and doing its job.
Not All HOCl Is the Same
Here's what most people don't know about HOCl products.
Hypochlorous acid is having a moment, you’ll find it in sprays, mists, and skincare from dozens of brands. But HOCl is a notoriously unstable molecule. Get the concentration, pH, or manufacturing process even slightly wrong, and it degrades fast, sometimes within days of opening.
That’s the gap Lumi Derma was built to close.
We manufacture in-house
HOCl may be the same molecule, but the finished solution depends on how it is generated, formulated, stored and maintained. We control every step, so every bottle meets the same standard.
We test every batch
Concentration and pH are verified before a single bottle ships, not just at formulation, but at production.
We formulate for stability
Our process is designed so the solution holds its potency for longer, rather than losing effectiveness the moment the bottle is opened.
We keep it purposeful
No added fragrance and no unnecessary complexity, just a focused formulation built around Hypochlorous Acid.
Isn't This Basically Bleach?
Hypochlorous acid and bleach (sodium hypochlorite) sound alike and are even distant chemical relatives, but they behave very differently on skin. Bleach is highly alkaline and can be caustic. Lumi Derma is formulated at a near-neutral pH, which is why it can be used directly on the face and neck without stinging or drying out your skin.
Think of it less as “diluted bleach” and more as a lab-made version of what your own immune cells already produce.
What This Means for Your Skin
- Calms redness and irritation without stripping the skin barrier
- Helps clear acne-causing bacteria without the sting of traditional treatments
- Works well after cleansing, before your serums and moisturiser
- Is gentle enough for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin
